A noise from the clutch side of the engine (usually the right-hand cover) that changes when you pull or release the lever. Two patterns matter. A whir, squeal or grind that appears when the lever is pulled usually comes from the release bearing, which only spins while the clutch is released. A rattle at idle in neutral that goes quiet when you pull the lever usually comes from play between the clutch basket and its drive gear, or worn basket slots. A light rattle is normal on some engines; a new or growing noise is the warning.
Is it safe to ride?
Ride with care and get it checked. A failing release bearing can break up and send pieces round the engine. If you hear grinding or the noise gets loud quickly, stop.
Quick checks first
- Engine warm, in neutral, at idle: listen at the right-hand engine cover while you pull and release the lever.
- Check the oil level. Low oil makes clutch noise louder.
- Check lever free play. With no free play the release bearing never stops spinning.
Diagnose it step by step
1Does the noise change when you pull and release the lever?
- No: it is probably not the clutch. Try Ticking noise from the top of the engine, Rattling noise from the cam chain area or Rumbling or growling from inside the engine.
- Yes: go to step 2.
2Is the oil level correct and the oil in good condition?
- No: Check the engine oil level and correct it, then listen again.
- Yes: go to step 3.
3Is the lever free play correct? (K-Light 125: 10 to 15 mm.)
- No: Adjust clutch lever free play. Free play protects the release bearing.
- Yes: go to step 4.
4Does the noise appear or get louder when you pull the lever (whir, squeal, grind)?
- Yes: the release bearing or lifter is worn. Go to Inspect and replace clutch plates and springs.
- No, it is a rattle with the lever out that goes quiet when pulled: go to step 5.
5Is the rattle new or getting louder, or is there metal in the oil?
- Metal flakes or chunks: stop riding. Inspect drained oil for clues and see Metal particles or flakes in the oil.
- New or louder rattle: worn basket slots, worn basket damper springs or play at the drive gear. Workshop: Inspect and replace clutch plates and springs.
- Faint and unchanged for a long time: compare with another bike of the same model; it may be normal.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Low or old oil | Level low, oil dark | Check the engine oil level |
| No free play | Lever pulls cable at once | Adjust clutch lever free play |
| Worn release bearing or lifter | Whir or squeal with lever pulled | Inspect and replace clutch plates and springs |
| Basket slot wear or drive gear play | Rattle at idle that stops when lever pulled | Inspect and replace clutch plates and springs |
