Gearbox and gear change

Gear lever is loose, bent or slipping on its shaft

The gear lever moves before the gears do, flops around, sits at a strange angle or is bent after a fall. A loose clamp bolt or worn splines (the fine teeth that lock the lever to the shaft) let it slip, so changes are incomplete and the bike finds false neutrals. If it comes off, you cannot change gear at all. Sometimes the shaft itself moves in the engine because its bush or seal is worn.

Is it safe to ride?

Ride with care and fix it soon. Carry the right spanner. If the lever falls off you will be stuck in one gear.

Quick checks first

  • Is the clamp bolt present and tight?
  • Is the lever bent or cracked?
  • Does the shaft (spindle) wobble in the engine, or is oil weeping around it?
  • Was the bike dropped on this side?

Diagnose it step by step

1Is the clamp bolt loose or missing?

  • Yes: refit and tighten it fully through the groove in the shaft. Then go to step 2 to check the splines.
  • No: go to step 2.

2With the bolt tight, can you move the lever without the shaft turning?

3Is the lever bent, cracked, or set so it touches the case or footpeg?

4On a linkage type, are the ball joints or the pedal pivot loose?

5Does the shaft itself wobble up and down, or is oil leaking around it?

  • Yes: the bush or seal is worn. Trace an oil leak to confirm; seal replacement is a workshop job.
  • No: the lever is fixed.

6Was the bike crashed or dropped?

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Loose clamp bolt Bolt loose or missing Tighten through the groove
Worn lever splines Lever teeth rounded Refit or replace the gear lever
Bent or cracked lever Visible after a fall Refit or replace the gear lever
Worn linkage Play at ball joints or pivot Check the gear lever and shift linkage
Worn shaft splines, bush or seal; bent shaft Shaft teeth worn, shaft wobbles, oil Assess internal gearbox faults
