A footpeg twists or wobbles under your foot, a folding peg will not fold or spring back, or the rear brake pedal is stiff, bent, or slow to return. A brake pedal that does not return fully keeps the rear brake dragging and the brake light on. This page covers footpegs and the rear brake pedal; gear and kickstart levers have their own pages.

Is it safe to ride?

With care for a loose footpeg once tightened. Do not ride if the brake pedal does not return, is bent so it is hard to use, or the peg bracket is cracked.

Quick checks first

  • Press and release the brake pedal: does it return fully to its stop?
  • Try to twist each footpeg.
  • Look at the brake light while pressing and releasing the pedal.
  • Look for cracks at the peg and pedal brackets.

Diagnose it step by step

1Is it the brake pedal, a footpeg, the gear lever or the kickstart?

2Is the brake pedal bent or cracked?

  • Yes: fit a new pedal. Do not straighten it. Then go to step 4.
  • No: go to step 3.

3Disconnect the brake rod or master cylinder pushrod. Does the pedal now move freely and return with its spring?

4Set pedal height and free play. Does the brake light go off when the pedal is released?

5Footpeg: does the whole peg bracket move?

  • Yes: tighten the mounting bolts to the bike's value (K-Light 125 footrest bolt: 45 to 50 N·m). If it loosens again, look for a stripped thread or a crack (Crack in the frame or a bracket).
  • No: go to step 6.
