If the oil smells sharply of petrol, feels thin, or the level rises above the upper mark without being topped up, fuel is getting into the crankcase. Thinned oil does not protect bearings and can catch fire more easily. On carburettor bikes the usual cause is a float needle that does not shut, letting fuel flow into the engine while parked with the tap on. Other causes are repeated flooding when starting, a leaking injector, very rich running, and worn rings that let unburned fuel past.
Is it safe to ride?
No, not until the cause is fixed and the oil is changed.
Quick checks first
- Is fuel dripping from the carburettor overflow pipe?
- Was the fuel tap left ON while parked (manual tap)?
- Was the engine cranked or kicked a lot without starting?
- Black smoke, wet black plug?
Diagnose it step by step
1Confirm with Check the engine oil level and Inspect drained oil for clues. Is the level high and the smell clearly petrol?
- No, it is milky: go to Oil is milky or creamy.
- Yes: go to step 2.
2Carburettor bike: does fuel run from the overflow pipe, or has the bike flooded after parking?
- Yes: the float needle or float is faulty. Go to Fuel pours out of the carburettor overflow pipe and Check the carburettor float and needle valve.
- No: go to step 3.
3Carburettor bike with a manual tap: was the tap left on while parked? Vacuum tap: does fuel still flow with the engine off?
- Yes: turn the manual tap off when parked. A vacuum tap that leaks needs checking with Check the fuel tap, lines and flow.
- No: go to step 4.
4Has the engine been hard to start, cranked a lot, or flooded?
- Yes: fuel washed past the rings. Fix the starting fault first: Engine is flooded and smells of fuel.
- No: go to step 5.
5Fuel-injected bike: is it running rich, or does the plug come out wet? The K-Light manual links a high oxygen sensor reading on a warm engine to a leaking injector.
- Yes: go to Check the fuel injector.
- No: go to step 6.
6Do Test engine compression. Low?
- Yes: worn rings let fuel past. See Low compression.
7. After the fault is fixed, change the oil with Change the engine oil and clean the strainer. Recheck the level after a week.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Carburettor float needle leaking | Overflow, flooding | Check the carburettor float and needle valve |
| Fuel tap left on or leaking | Flow with engine off | Check the fuel tap, lines and flow |
| Repeated flooding | Hard starting history | Engine is flooded and smells of fuel |
| Leaking injector | Rich running | Check the fuel injector |
| Worn rings | Low compression | Test engine compression |
