A hand lever is bent, snapped, wobbles on its pivot, or the whole lever assembly turns on the handlebar. This usually follows a drop or crash, or long wear on the pivot. A broken front brake lever leaves you with less braking; a broken clutch lever makes gear changes and stopping in gear hard.

Is it safe to ride?

Not with a broken, cracked or badly bent brake or clutch lever, or a brake lever assembly that moves on the bar. Replace or fix it first.

Quick checks first

  • Which lever: front brake (right) or clutch (left; on scooters the left lever is the rear brake)?
  • Is it bent, cracked, snapped, or just loose?
  • Does the whole perch or master cylinder turn on the bar?
  • After a fall: check the brake fluid reservoir for cracks and leaks.

Diagnose it step by step

1Is the lever cracked or broken, or bent so it is hard to reach or touches the throttle or grip?

2Does the whole lever assembly (perch or master cylinder) turn on the handlebar when you pull or push it?

  • Yes: tighten the clamp bolts to the bike's value (K-Light 125 left lever assembly bolt: 10 to 12 N·m). If the bar is bent from a fall, see The bike has been dropped or crashed.
  • No: go to step 3.

3Does the lever wobble up and down or sideways on its pivot?

4Is the lever stiff or slow to return?

5After any lever work: does the brake work, and does the brake light come on with the lever and go off when released?

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Bent or broken lever from a fall Visible damage New lever, lever service
Clamp bolts loose Assembly turns on bar Tighten clamp
Worn or dry pivot Lever wobbles or sticks Lever service
Bent handlebar Lever angle wrong after fall Crash check
