On most geared motorcycles neutral sits halfway between first and second gear, so it needs a short, gentle lift of the lever. When it is hard to find, the usual cause is a clutch that does not fully release (drag), so the gears keep turning and the dogs will not line up. Other causes are a lever that does not move its full stroke, a neutral light that is not working (so you are in neutral but do not know it), and less often wear inside the gearbox.

Is it safe to ride?

Yes, but stop with care. If you cannot find neutral at a junction, hold the clutch lever in and the front brake on. Do not let the bike creep into traffic.

Quick checks first

  • Try finding neutral while the bike is still rolling slowly just before you stop. It is often easier.
  • Use a short half-lift from first, not a full stroke.
  • Turn the engine off and rock the bike back and forth while you lift the lever.
  • Check the green N light works with the key on.

Diagnose it step by step

1With the engine off, rock the bike and lift the lever gently from first. Does neutral go in easily?

  • Yes: the gearbox is fine; with the engine running the clutch is dragging. Go to step 2.
  • No, it is just as hard with the engine off: go to step 4.

2Is the clutch lever free play too large, or does the bike creep in gear with the lever pulled?

3Is the idle speed high?

4Does the gear lever move its full stroke freely and spring back, without touching your boot, the footpeg or the case?

5Does the bike roll freely (it is in neutral) while the N light stays off?

  • Yes: the light or switch is the fault, not the gearbox. Test the neutral switch.
  • No, it really will not go into neutral: go to step 6.

6Does neutral still skip or refuse after the clutch and lever are correct?

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Clutch drag Neutral easy with engine off, hard with it running Adjust clutch lever free play
Technique Full stroke instead of a short half-lift Practise a gentle half-lift, rolling slowly
Lever or linkage Lever short of travel, touching, or stiff Check the gear lever and shift linkage
Neutral light fault Bike rolls in neutral but light off Test the neutral switch
Worn stopper arm or warped plates Persists after all the above Assess internal gearbox faults, Inspect and replace clutch plates and springs
