Smoke and exhaust

Exhaust has become much louder

Ride with careAlso called: noisy exhaust, blown silencer, loud muffler, broken baffle

The silencer (muffler) quietens the exhaust with chambers, perforated tubes and sometimes sound-absorbing packing. A sudden or gradual rise in noise usually means a leaking joint, a hole rusted through, a cracked weld, a baffle that has broken loose inside the silencer, or packing that has burned away. Road bikes must meet noise rules; the K-Light was approved to UNECE Regulation 41, and a loud exhaust can fail a roadside or annual check.

Is it safe to ride?

Yes with care for a short time. Stop if the pipe is hanging loose, touching the tyre or chain, or if you smell exhaust fumes at a standstill.

Quick checks first

  • Look along the pipe for holes, cracks, soot streaks and loose clamps.
  • Shake the cold silencer: does something rattle inside?
  • Has the bike been dropped or hit a kerb?
  • Has anyone removed the baffle or end cap?

Diagnose it step by step

1Engine cold. Look at the whole exhaust from the head to the outlet. Is there a visible hole, crack or broken weld?

  • Yes: the pipe or silencer needs welding or replacement. A temporary exhaust bandage can get you home. Do not patch the catalytic converter section.
  • No: go to step 2.

2Start the engine outside. Is the extra noise a sharp tick or puff at a joint?

3Shake the cold silencer and tap it. Is there a rattle inside?

  • Yes: an internal baffle has broken. The silencer usually cannot be repaired by hand; replace it with one approved for your bike.
  • No: go to step 4.

4Does your silencer have a removable end cap or baffle? Is it missing or loose?

  • Missing or loose: refit or replace it. Riding without it is often illegal and can upset the mixture.
  • Present: go to step 5.

5Is the silencer a packed type (common on two-strokes and sport bikes), and does a puff of fibre or a sharp exhaust note come from it?

6. Check the mounts with Check exhaust mounts and heat shields. A loose silencer can open its joint under vibration.

Causes, most likely first

Cause How to confirm Fix
Leaking joint or gasket Ticking, soot Find and fix an exhaust leak
Rust hole or cracked weld Visible hole Replace or weld the pipe
Broken internal baffle Rattle inside silencer Replace the silencer
Missing end cap or baffle Look at outlet Refit or replace
Burned packing Fibre, harsh note Decarbonise a two-stroke exhaust and port
Loose mount Silencer moves Check exhaust mounts and heat shields
