When the wheel turns, the rim moves from side to side or up and down. You may see it when looking at the wheel spinning on the stand, or feel a weave, a pulse through the bars or a rhythmic bump. The cause can be a bent rim, loose spokes, a worn bearing, a bent axle or a tyre that is not seated evenly.
Is it safe to ride?
No, if the wobble is easy to see or the bike weaves. A bent rim can crack, and a wobbling front wheel can start a dangerous shake. Find the cause first.
Quick checks first
- Lift the wheel and spin it slowly while you watch the rim against a fixed point.
- Watch the tyre moulded line next to the rim: is it even all round?
- Grip the tyre top and bottom and rock it: any play?
- Spoked wheel: tap spokes, listen for dull loose ones.
Diagnose it step by step
1Rock the lifted wheel at top and bottom. Is there play?
- Yes: the bearing or axle is loose, which makes the wheel look buckled. Go to Wheel moves sideways on the axle.
- No: go to step 2.
2Spin the wheel. Is it the tyre that wobbles while the rim edge stays true?
- Yes: the tyre is not seated evenly or is damaged. Check the bead line and the tyre (Inspect tyres for wear and damage). A shop can reseat it.
- No, the rim moves: go to step 3.
3. Measure runout on the rim (Check a wheel for runout). Is it over the limit? (K-Light 125 limit: 2.0 mm lateral and radial.)
- No: the wheel is within limits. If you feel vibration, see Vibration at certain speeds.
- Yes: go to step 4.
4Is the wheel spoked?
- Yes: go to step 5.
- No, cast alloy: a cast wheel over the limit must be replaced. Never heat or hammer it straight. Check for cracks (Rim is dented or cracked).
5Are spokes loose or broken, and is the rim free of dents?
- Yes: Check and tighten spokes to true the wheel. See Spokes are loose or broken.
- No, spokes tight but rim bent or dented: the rim must be replaced and the wheel respoked by a wheel builder.
6After a crash or big impact, was the wheel removed and the axle checked?
- No: a bent axle can make a good wheel wobble. A workshop measures it on V-blocks (K-Light 125 axle bend limit: 0.2 mm).
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Loose spokes | Dull sound, rim out of true | Tighten spokes |
| Worn bearing or loose axle | Play when rocked | Check wheel bearings |
| Tyre not seated evenly | Rim true, tyre line uneven | Reseat tyre |
| Bent or dented rim | Runout over limit with tight spokes | New rim or wheel |
| Bent axle | Workshop V-block check | New axle |
