When you let go of the twist grip, it should spring back to closed at once, from any position, with the bars straight or turned. If it returns slowly, stays partly open, or the engine keeps revving, the throttle is sticking. This is one of the most dangerous faults a bike can have.
Is it safe to ride?
No. Stop now. If it happens while riding: pull the clutch in (or, on a scooter, brake firmly), use the engine stop (kill) switch, steer to a safe place and stop. On an electric bike, brake and switch off.
Quick checks first
- Engine off: twist and release the grip with bars straight, full left and full right. Where does it stick?
- Is the grip rubbing on the switch housing or a bar-end weight?
- Did the bike fall or crash recently? (Bent bar or housing.)
- Is the throttle free play almost zero?
Diagnose it step by step
1Does it stick only when the bars are turned to one side?
- Yes: the cable is too tight or routed wrongly, and turning the bars pulls it. Reroute it in its guides and set free play (Adjust throttle free play).
- No: go to step 2.
2Slacken the cable adjuster fully and disconnect the cable at the grip (or open the grip housing). Does the grip tube now turn freely on the bar?
- No: the grip is binding. Clean the bar and grip tube, remove burrs or glue, check the bar-end weight and housing are not pressing the grip, check the bar is not bent (Lubricate or replace the throttle cable).
- Yes: go to step 3.
3Pull the inner cable by hand at the grip end. Does it slide smoothly and return?
- No: the cable is dry, kinked or frayed. Oil it or replace it (Lubricate or replace the throttle cable, A control cable is frayed or stiff).
- Yes: go to step 4.
4Disconnect the cable at the carburettor or throttle body. Does the slide or throttle plate snap shut by its own spring?
- No, carburettor: the slide is sticking (dirt, worn bore, top cap overtightened). Clean the carburettor.
- No, fuel injection: carbon on the throttle plate or a weak return spring. Clean the throttle body.
- Yes: the fault was the cable or grip. Reconnect, set free play, and test at full lock.
5Grip and throttle snap shut, but the engine still revs high?
- Yes: this is an idle fault, not a sticking throttle. Go to Idle speed is too high or Revs hang.
6. Electric bike? There is no cable; the grip turns a sensor with a spring. A grip that does not return, or power that stays on, needs Power cuts in and out with the throttle and a workshop check of the throttle sensor.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Cable too tight or misrouted | Sticks or idle rises at full lock | Adjust free play, reroute |
| Grip binding on bar | Grip stiff with cable off | Clean grip and bar |
| Dry or frayed cable | Inner cable stiff by hand | Lube or replace cable |
| Sticky slide or throttle plate | Does not close with cable off | Carburettor, throttle body |
