Some combustion gas always leaks past the piston rings into the crankcase. This is called blow-by. The breather hose lets it out, usually into the air filter box. A little mist is normal. Steady smoke from the breather, from the oil filler when the cap is off, or oil collecting in the air box means the rings or cylinder are worn, the oil is overfilled, or the breather itself is blocked. The K-Light smoke chart treats smoke from the oil filler at high revs as a sign of cylinder, piston and ring wear.
Is it safe to ride?
Yes with care. Check oil often. Do not ride with an air filter soaked in oil.
Quick checks first
- Is the oil level above the upper mark?
- Is the breather hose connected, unkinked and not blocked?
- Is the air box drain full of oil?
- Any blue smoke from the exhaust too?
Diagnose it step by step
1Is the oil level above the upper mark? Check with Check the engine oil level.
- Yes: drain to the correct level and retest. If it rises again, see Too much oil in the engine.
- No: go to step 2.
2Inspect the breather with Check the crankcase breather. Is the hose kinked, blocked or the separator full?
- Yes: clear it, empty the air box drain and clean or replace the air filter with Clean or replace the air filter. Retest.
- No: go to step 3.
3Engine warm and idling, oil filler cap off (stand back, keep the cap clean). Does smoke pulse out of the filler in time with the engine?
- Yes, clearly: heavy blow-by. Go to step 4.
- No, only a faint mist: normal. Watch the oil level over the next weeks.
4Do Test engine compression. Is it low, and does it rise with the wet test?
- Yes: worn rings or cylinder. Go to step 5.
- Normal: rings may be stuck with carbon or slightly worn. Change oil more often and recheck.
5. Ask for Do a leak-down test. Air escaping at the breather or filler confirms the rings. Then go to Assess the top end (cylinder, piston, valves).
What happens if you ignore it: oil fouls the air filter and throttle body, oil use rises, the oil turns black quickly, and pressure in the crankcase pushes oil past seals.
Causes, most likely first
| Cause | How to confirm | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Oil overfilled | Level above mark | Check the engine oil level |
| Blocked or kinked breather | Hose check | Check the crankcase breather |
| Worn rings or cylinder | Filler smoke, wet test rises | Assess the top end (cylinder, piston, valves) |
| Stuck rings (carbon) | Normal compression, oil turns black fast | Test engine compression |
